Andrew GILBERT

Andrew Gilbert est né en 1980 à Edimbourg en Ecosse.

Il poursuit de manière obsessionnelle et scrupuleuse sa réflexion sur les guerres de conquêtes et de colonisation avec une galerie de portraits féroce et sanglante.

Dans ses dessins de batailles et de guerres, il présente le théâtre absurde de la geste militaire, et le socle vacillant de la construction de l’idée de nation.

Cet Ecossais de 39 ans connaît sur le bout des doigts l’Histoire d’Europe, celle in situ, mais plus particulièrement celle qui a conduit les Européens dans les guerres de conquête, notamment sur le sol africain et indien.

De ces « exploits » des héros militaires, il tire des scènes aux détails d’une cruauté non dissimulée, et impose tant aux guerres coloniales de l’Empire britannique qu’aux guerres napoléoniennes le même traitement.

Andrew Gilbert revisite d’une manière très personnelle la peinture d’Histoire traditionnelle, avec un regard acéré et sans se départir de son humour grinçant. Dans ce jeu de massacre, les protagonistes de tous les conflits se valent : Zoulous, Soudanais, Hottentots, Boers se mêlent aux victimes des guerres sur le sol européen, tout comme le lustre des costumes napoléoniens côtoie l’éclat des masques kotas et des fétiches, et des trophées macabres.

Installé à Berlin depuis plus de dix ans, Andrew Gilbert dessine tous les jours, entouré d’une bibliothèque digne d’un historien. C’est dans ces livres qu’il va puiser de manière obsessionnelle les détails que l’on retrouve transfigurés dans ses dessins : ornements de costumes, positions des bataillons, citations, etc.

Andrew Gilbert pose un regard aigu, sans limite ni pudeur s’appuyant sur un trait exercé et référencé. De ce monde barbare et empreint d’une symbolique brutale, où la sauvagerie ne se trouve pas forcément là où on pensait la rencontrer, rien ne lui échappe. Un dessin loufoque, cruel, documenté, contemporain.
